Ally is the award-winning author of a number of historical adventures for children. Her dream job as a child was to be an Egyptologist and dig up mummies and treasure. Her favourite subjects at school were English and History and she loved nothing better in the holidays than exploring ruined castles and decaying mansions and imagining what it must have been like to live in them with no electricity or hot and cold running water.
She has a BA in Medieval History and French and an MA in Writing for Children. After a career in public relations and marketing telling other people’s stories, she now spends her time combining her love of writing and time-travelling to create her own exciting adventure stories set in the past.
BLACK POWDER, her debut middle grade novel about a boy caught up in the infamous Gunpowder Plot, won the 2017 Historical Association’s Young Quills Award (‘Primary’ category) and the North Somerset Teachers’ Book Award 2017 (‘Moving on’ category) and was shortlisted for a number of other regional and national awards. Her second novel, THE BURIED CROWN, set during World War Two, and interwoven with myth and magic linked to the Sutton Hoo Anglo-Saxon ship burial, was shortlisted for The Staffordshire Young Teen Fiction Prize 2019 and the East Sussex Children’s Book Awards 2019. THE QUEEN’S FOOL, Ally’s third book for Chicken House, set at the time of the Tudors, is due out in February 2021.
She has also written a retelling of Charlotte Bronte’s classic tale, JANE EYRE.
Ally is married and lives with her husband and assorted garden wildlife in Farnham, Surrey.
